Manual-input calculator

Gain, loss and recovery

Calculate percentage change or the gain required to recover a loss using your own values.

Method gain-loss-v1

Your inputs

Use a decimal point, without commas, plus signs or exponent notation. Currency codes use three uppercase letters. Leave fields for other modes blank.

For value change, fill starting and ending values and leave loss percent blank. For recovery, fill loss percent and leave both values blank.

Value change only. Enter a positive value in the same unit as the ending value.

Value change only. Use the same unit and valuation basis as the starting value.

Recovery only. Enter a loss from 0 to 100 percent. A complete loss has no finite recovery percentage.

Values are submitted in the form body, not the page URL. This form does not save a calculation or retrieve live market data.

Enter your values and select Calculate. Results will include the method, units and assumptions for your inputs.

How this is calculated

Value change = 100 × (ending value − starting value) ÷ starting value. The starting value must be positive.

Recovery after loss = 100 × loss percent ÷ (100 − loss percent). A 50% loss requires a 100% gain on the remaining value to recover. A 100% loss leaves zero, so no finite percentage gain can recover the starting value.
